DeLorean Bringing an All-New Alpha5 EV Sporting, hits 88mph in 4.4 sec

DeLorean Bringing an All-New Alpha5 EV Sporting, hits 88mph in 4.4 sec

On Monday, the DeLorean Alpha5 broke cover in its production design ahead of the car's formal online debut set for May 31. With gullwing doors, seating for four, and lots of LED lightning, the car features a few nods to the past while firmly planting itself in the electric era.

Not going back to the future

Like the DMC-12 of the late 1970s, the Alpha5  was penned by Italdesign. However, it's not a throwback or typical reimagination of a cult classic, and the body is not made of stainless steel. The clean-sheet design features horizontal LED headlights and taillights, a fan-like wheel design, massive gullwing doors, gullwing outlines in the lower front grille and rear valence, a louver-like design on the rear window, and the world DeLorean on the left side of the rear bumper, but the nods to the past seem to stop there.

The cabin appears to be completely modern with an almost Porsche Taycan-like design. A digital gauge cluster and floating touchscreen infotainment system grab the eyes, and the climate controls are set low behind the touchscreen infotainment system. Based on photos, the four seats are upholstered in a wool-like material, possibly with some leather portions. The rear seats are full size, but they may lack much leg room, possibly making the car a 2+2 rather than a true four seater.

This baby is electric

The Alpha5's battery pack is larger 100 kwh and can fast charge at a rate of about 150 kw. DeLorean says the range will exceed 300 miles thanks in part to an estimated 0.23 coefficient of drag.

DeLorean hasn't talked about the Alpha5's motors yet, but Chief Marketing Officer Troy Beetz told MA “You could assume that with most EV sports cars, all-wheel drive would be a must as would a flat floor battery." We take that to mean there will be a motor up front and one in the back.

DeLorean said the Alpha5 has an estimated top speed of 155 mph, sprints from 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds, and hits 88 mph in 4.4 seconds. Any speculation that it travels back in time at that speed is purely conjecture.

Beetz told MA the new DeLorean will “be a driver’s car, bringing back the joy of driving.” De Vries followed with, “in other words, it’s not an iPad on wheels.”

The original DeLorean DMC-12 was 168.0 inches long and 78.3-inches wide, with a 95.0-inch wheelbase. The Alpha5 larger in every way, at 196.7-inches long, 80.5-inches wide, and a 90.6-inch wheelbase.

DeVries told MA the reborn DeLorean will be based on a new chassis structure with a carbon-fiber tub.

The Alpha5 will make its public debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d ‘Elegance Award ramp on Aug. 18 and appear on the Concept Lawn during Monterey Car Week on Aug. 21.

More to come

DeVries told MA DeLorean can't survive as a company with just a coupe as it's a niche market. Other models are set to augment the Alpha5. Quietly placed on the Alpha5 microsite are the graphics for an Alpha, Alpha2, and Alpha3. Curiously absent is an Alpha4. No information on these other models has been shared or teased, but DeVries told MA these other vehicles will represent larger segments in the marketplace and each will feature its own platform.

DeLorean Motor Company will launch its newest electric car. The company is expected to share more details about the Alpha 5 model soon.

DeLorean is about to unveil more information about the upcoming Alpha5 EV soon.

According to a report by Electrek, DeLorean has dropped some photos of the all-new electric-vehicle model. It should be noted that the car manufacturer will announce the extra information about it on Monday, May 30 at 9:00 PM PT.

Furthermore, DeLorean also wants to showcase the Alpha5 model on Aug. 18 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.  as DMC-24. Previously, DeLorean had gullwing doors on the old cars. This time, the firm will be placing electronic gullwing doors for the seating.

DeLorean EV is Pretty Impressive

If you're planning on traveling for hundreds of miles, the upcoming DeLorean EV is capable of operating 300 miles of range. On top of that, it has a 100 kWh battery pack and a unique drive setup for a dual motor type.

It's a speedy car that can reach an accelerating speed of 60mph. The Alpha5 EV can do this in just 2.99 seconds. Interestingly, it can run from zero to 88 mph in 4.35 seconds only.

According to IGN, the upcoming DeLorean electric car is projected to have a top speed of 155ph. That's pretty impressive for a modern car that's dependent on electric batteries.

For its pricing, it will most likely cost $175,000. DeLorean says that the production for this model will take place in the next two years at the new DMC facility in San Antonio, Texas.

In the meantime, the specs of the Alpha5 are currently listed for the "Base Performance Model."

Why DMC Cars Are at Top Quality

Per IGN's story, the new EV was made possible thanks to the collaboration of DeLorean with ItalDesign by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

The same report says that the long-time running car under DMC will not rust easily because of its stainless steel exterior. Additionally, the upcoming car could potentially feature a 250hbp twin-turbo of PRV V6.

This might mean that the company will upgrade its engine to cope with modern usage. From 1981 to 1983, it was said that nearly 9,000 DeLorean cars were manufactured.

As of press time, 6,000 units are reportedly functioning up to this day.

If you want to know more about the upcoming model, you can visit the official site of Delorean to watch its live stream, which will happen 16 hours from now.
